The University of Granada has two big campuses. Fuentenueva Campus is in the plain land near the historical city centre of Granada and the Cartuja Campus is at the top of the hills in Cartuja area. My working space was located in the Fuentenueva campus. The laboratory was on the fifth floor of the Science Faculty, where the Plant Physiology department is situated. The laboratory is fully equipped with all research devices, materials, computer, printer, scanner, refrigerators, heating and lighting facilities.
During the office hour, I met other teachers and researchers of the department in the laboratory and sometimes in the kitchen and had chats and exchange of knowledge on various social, economic, cultural and scientific topics. Two professors are especially interested in enhancing their German language skills, as they have worked in German and Swiss universities and also they like to go to some German speaking universities for future collaboration. So they have some and met me at their convenience to practice German language with me and I also tried to get some linguistic, cultural and historical information and knowledge of Spain from them. I also got some Spanish language books from them to increase my efficiency in Spanish language. Moreover, I have tried to learn the practical use of a lot of terminologies from the sign boards, nameplates, instructions, indicators and traffic signs in the university campus and in the city streets in Granada. I have also walked to most of the suburban areas of Granada to be oriented with the urban and rural traditions and social practices in Granada.
Since the beginning I have frequently visited the central library and the libraries in the related faculties to find the scientific books and journals, which were relevant for my research work. Moreover, using my university Email I have got many digital books, journals and articles through the online platform of the university library. In some cases, I requested my supervising professor to facilitate my access to some particular issues of the books and journals, which were difficult for me to get from the computers in the laboratory.
However, some training and practical workshops and seminars took place in the Cartuja campus and also in other academic buildings in the city centre. My supervising professor from the university took me to some field visits in Malaga and other agricultural fields in the rural areas. On December 13 we went to the visit the Instituto de Hortofruticultura Subtropical y Mediterranea “La Mayora“(IHSM) and Estacion Experimental “La Mayora“ del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (EELM-CSIC), where we have visited the practical expamples of precision agriculture in the fields of Papayas, Avocado, Carambola, Lichi, Mango and many other fruits and vegetables. In the green house gardens, the water, sunlight and other bio-fertilizers were supplied at the exact point of the plants through the use of sensors and automated supply equipment.
The scientific researchers and experts have also shown us various insects and pests using the microscope and projectors, which may harm the specific plants at the specific season. They also explained how these insects, pests and weeds are controlled without chemical pesticides.
On 6 May I was invited to attend the practical testing of the olive oil and olive soap in the testing laboratory in the Cartuja campus of the university. So I gathered the practical experience of testing it, which I learnt in a week long training session held in November 2024 in the Centro Mediterraneo of the university.
